Free Activities for Kids in June

Brodie asked Spencer if he was excited for summer and he said, "Ya, I can play electronics whenever I want to."  This stems from the condition I have placed on him that his homework must be done before he can play the computer, Wii, or DS.  As much as he loves to play outside, I really don't think he'll spend the whole summer inside, but Tessa is quite addicted to the computer herself so I decided I need a bunch of fun things to do throughout the summer to reduce the number of times I have to set a timer and deal with upset kids.  I have made a list of a bunch of free activities I have found in the Sandy or near areas for the month of June and thought I'd share my list here in case anyone else is looking for ideas.  If you have older kids or don't live in the Sandy area I suggest you look on your library's site and/or your city's site for some more ideas that work for you.  All of these activites are free:

 Saturday, June 4th:

Free Fishing Day in the state of Utah.  No Fishing License is required this day, although all other rules apply.  The Sandy Urban Fishery Park is a large park in Sandy with a pavilion and playground as well as a stocked pond with trout and catfish.  It is open from sunrise until 10 pm and there is a limit of 2 fish.  You can fish here whenever with a license for anyone over 12 years old but this day you don't need the license.

In addition to these activities there are soooo many parks and playgrounds nearby, including all the school playgrounds where school will be out for the summer.  I can take my kids to a different playground twice a week and still not hit all the ones within a 20 minute drive from my house.  Some of my favorite playgrounds are the ones at Big Bear Park (off Poppy Lane) where they have a lot of the old school metal structures that are fun for the kids and Crestwood Park (by Crestwood Pool) where they have the large tires kids can play on and in.  Also there are water features at Gateway, Old Farm Park (in Riverton), one somewhere in Herriman, and at Liberty Park (both a water splash pad and the 7 Canyons Water Feature).  Speaking of Liberty Park they also have the duck pond and quite a few playgrounds and, for a fee, the Tracy Aviary and a small ferris wheel.  Sugarhouse Park also has a duck pond and quite a few different playgrounds.

Wheeler Farm is free and a fun place for kids to see horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, cows, and a duck pond as well as picnic benches and some old tractors to look at.

Between the Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons, Millcreek Canyon, and Bells Canyon there are so many free hiking trails and camping spots less than half an hour from my house (Millcreek does charge a fee per vehicle--I think $2 or $3).

I am so lucky to live in Sandy where there are so many fun things to do so close to my house.  That's why I only put 7-8,000 miles a year on my car!  I hope you all have as much fun as I'm planning to this summer!

Oh, and if anyone knows of any other fun, free activities around here in June, please comment with the details!  I'm already composing my list for July...
